It’s been hailed as Scotland’s newest tourism success story, and now those involved in the North Coast 500 have made the near 500-mile round trip from Caithness to Carnoustie to share their secrets with an area hoping to be the country’s next must-see destination.

North Coast 500 Managing Director Tom Campbell and Douglas Gibson, Project Co-ordinator for the Wester Ross Tourism Group, have been invited to speak at the Dundee & Angus Tourism Conference, to reveal how they helped to attract visitors to their businesses following the creation of “Scotland’s Route 66.”

The conference, which will be attended by representatives from over 100 local businesses will take place on Tuesday 21 March at Carnoustie Golf Hotel and is delivered by Dundee City Council, Angus Council, the Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce and VisitScotland.

With the arrival of V&A Museum of Design set to propel Dundee and Angus into the global spotlight, the local tourism industry wants to make the most of this one-in-a lifetime opportunity to position the East of Scotland, as one of the top tourism destinations in the UK.

The North Coast 500 is a great example of the might of local tourism when businesses work together to connect with visitors. Other speakers will include Scottish Government Tourism Team Leader, Fiona Cook, providing an insight into the future of tourism in the region and Malcolm Roughead, VisitScotland Chief Executive, who will explore the visitor journey and the importance of embracing new technology.

The national tourism organisation recently launched its first ever virtual reality app, ScotlandVR, which allows users to take a virtual tour of 26 top attractions including RRS Discovery.

Malcolm Roughead, VisitScotland Chief Executive said: “ScotlandVR is our first venture into virtual reality as we look at new and creative ways to inspire holidaymakers to our shores. The way visitors access information is changing all the time, the Scottish tourism industry needs to embrace new technology, innovation and new ways of working if it wants to compete in a competitive global market.

“As a region renowned for its innovation and creativity, I’m sure those in Dundee and Angus will rise to that challenge, particularly as we enter an exciting new era for tourism in the East of Scotland.

“Tourism is more than a holiday experience. It creates jobs and sustains communities in every corner of the country, all year round and is at the heart of the Scottish economy.”

Delegates will also receive an update on work to create a narrative for the region. The four local authorities and V&A have been working together, with design agency Whitespace, to create a proposition to encourage more people to visit the east of Scotland.

    2017 Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology
  • 2017 is the year to delve into the past and discover Scotland’s fascinating stories through a wide-ranging variety of new and existing activity to drive the nation’s tourism and events sector, boosting tourism across Scotland.
  • The Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology begins on 1 January 2017 and will end on 31 December 2017. It will build on the momentum generated by previous themed years in Scotland including the 2015 Year of Food and Drink, Homecoming Scotland 2014, the Year of Creative and the Year of Natural.
  • The Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology is a Scottish Government initiative being led by VisitScotland, and supported by a variety of partners including Creative Scotland, Scottish Tourism Alliance, Scottish Enterprise, The National Trust for Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Built Environment Forum Scotland, Heritage Lottery Fund, Museums Galleries Scotland and Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland.
